How to Use Smart Lock Feature on Android Devices

Smart Lock is a feature on Android that allows you to keep your phone unlocked in certain situations, such as when you’re at home or when your phone is connected to a trusted Bluetooth device. This can make it more comfortable to use your phone without having to constantly enter your passcode or PIN.

In this guide, I will show you how to use the Smart Lock feature on Android phones and everything you need to know. You may also want to check out some Pros and cons of using Smart Lock on Android devices.

How to Use the Smart Lock Feature on Android

Before you can start using Smart Lock, you need to set it up on your Android device. Here’s how to do it:

  • STEP #1: Go to your device’s settings and click on “Security” or “Biometrics and Security,” depending on your Android version.
  • STEP #2: If you haven’t already, you’ll need to set up a screen lock method, such as a PIN, pattern, or password. Smart Lock will work in conjunction with your screen lock for added security.
  • STEP #3: Scroll down in the security settings until you find “Smart Lock.” Click on it to access the Smart Lock menu.
  • STEP #4: You may be asked to confirm your PIN, pattern, or password at this point to proceed.

In the Smart Lock menu, you’ll see several options for Smart Lock methods. We have:

  • On-Body Detection: This option keeps your device unlocked while it’s on your person and locked when you set it down.
  • Trusted Places: Add locations where your device should remain unlocked, such as your home or office.
  • Trusted Devices: Connect your Android device to Bluetooth devices, like a smartwatch or car, and it will remain unlocked when connected to these devices.
  • Trusted Face: Use facial recognition to unlock your device when it recognizes your face.
  • Trusted Voice: Set up voice recognition to unlock your device with a specific voice command.

For the purposes of this tutorial, we will explore more on the first three options (i.e. On-Body Detection, Trusted Places, and Trusted Devices.)

When on-body detection is enabled, your phone will stay unlocked when it’s in your pocket or purse. The phone uses an accelerometer to detect when you’re moving.

If you sit down for a long period of time, such as when you’re at a movie theater or on a plane, your phone will eventually lock. You can unlock your phone manually by entering your passcode or PIN.

Once you’ve added a trusted place, your phone will stay unlocked when you’re in that place. You’ll need to lock your phone manually when you leave the trusted place.

How to Use Smart Lock with Trusted Devices
